Controversial Coventry Plan Flunks Out

A controversial plan to reconfigure elementary schools in the Coventry district has been withdrawn.

The school committee was set to vote Thursday night on Superintendent Don Cowart's proposal to merge the community's five elementary schools into four, and separate students in the schools by grade.

The plan received pushback from parents, who felt the experience would have adverse effects on their children.

Cowart says his attention will now move toward how to close a two-million-dollar budget deficit, and warns cuts to staff and programs could be in the offing.
