Senate President Breaks Committee Tie On Abortion Access

The Rhode Island Senate Judiciary Committee passed a bill to expand abortion access on Tuesday.

The bill would provide abortion coverage for Medicaid recipients and repeal the coverage exclusion on state employee insurance plans.

The vote from the committee was 7-to-6, with Senate President Dominick Ruggerio casting the deciding vote.

Ruggerio, who opposed the state's abortion codification law that was signed in 2019, said yesterday he wants state employees and individuals on Medicaid to have access to the same health insurance benefits as all other Rhode Islanders.

The bill now goes to the full Senate on Thursday.
