Providence Committee Hears From Emergency Social Service Response Group

(Providence, RI)--Providence leaders are researching options for shifting some social service responsibilities away from the city police department.The City Council Finance Committee Tuesday night heard from an emergency social service response organization based in Eugene, Oregon, which responds to issues such as homelessness, substance abuse and mental illness.Calls for police departments to have their responsibilities reduced have been part of the racial justice response to the George Floyd murder; last month, the Providence Finance Committee held a public hearing that lasted nine hours featuring numerous calls from constituents to defund the police.
