(Providence, RI) -- A federal lawsuit claims Rhode Island is failing to meet its constitutional obligation to prepare students to be capable citizens. The suit was filed in federal court in Providence on Wednesday on behalf of fourteen students by a New York law professor and the Rhode Island Center for Justice, naming Governor Gina Raimondo, the state Department of Education, General Assembly leaders and others as defendants. The litigation claims they have failed to provide tens of thousands of Rhode Island students with an education that will teach them how to vote, serve on a jury, understand economic, social and political systems sufficiently to make informed choices, and participate effectively in civic activities.
